Tools - Settings - Quick search/filter/starter - tab Quick search/filter

Under the tab "Quick search/filter" the following settings can be defined:

Quick search

It is sufficient to type a few characters of a search string to quickly locate a file or folder name in the active panel.

A quick search field containing those characters appears on the left of the status bar (see "Overview of the user interface"), and the first item matching the search string will be highlighted in the file/folder list. The keys ↓ or ↑ will skip to the next or previous matching items, respectively.

The following settings are offered:

  • Start quick search from top
If this setting is checked, quick search starts with the topmost item in the active panel; otherwise the search starts from the currently highlighted item.
  • Searched fraction must exist at the beginning of the text
If this setting is checked, the searched fraction must be at the beginning of the name. Otherwise the searched string may be anywhere in the name.
  • Ignore diacritical marks
If this setting is checked, diacritical marks are ignored. For example, when searching "a", there are searched also "á", "ä", "à", "â", "å", "ă".
  • Quick search field auto close time:
This setting defines how long (in seconds) before the quick search field will automatically close. 0 seconds means the quick search field will not close automatically, but only manually (by "ESC" or mouse click on the active panel).

Quick filter

The quick filter can reduce the number of files and folders displayed in the active panel. The quick filter bar is located at the right end of the status bar of each panel (see "Overview of the user interface").

The filtering can be done by typing a string in the input field or (if there is already some text there) by clicking the button. The panel will then show only those files and folders containing the typed string in their name. Deleting the text from the input field or clicking the button will deactivate the filter.

The following settings are offered:

  • Quick filter bar always visible
If this setting is checked, the quick filter bar is always visible.
If it is not checked, the quick filter bar can be shown and activated for typing by the hotkey "Ctrl+Y". The quick filter bar can be hidden by activating the hotkey "Ctrl+Y" again.
  • Auto add wildcards "*"
If this setting is checked, the filter will find files and folders that contain the filter string anywhere in their names. If it is not checked, the filter will search only from the beginning of names.
  • Action "Filter off" deactivates quick filter too
If this setting is checked, the action "Filter off" also deactivates the quick filter. There are two ways to activate "Filter off":
    • Activate the menu item "Folder → Filter → Filter off".
This menu item exists only if there is at least one filter defined under the menu item "Folder → Filter → Set filter" in the dialog "Define  filter".
    • Activate the menu item "Folder → Filter → Set filter" or the hotkey "Alt+Y", then the key "*.* All files".
  • Keep filter on folder change
If this setting is checked, the quick filter will be kept when changing to a different folder.
  • Keep filter on tab change
If this setting is checked, the set quick filter is used again, if after a change to another tab, the initial tab is reactivated.
  • Clear edit field when quick filter is deactivated
If this setting is checked, the quick filter edit field is emptied, as soon as the quick filter is deactivated.
  • Hotkey activates filter when field is not empty

If the quick filter is currently active, the hotkey "Ctrl+Y" returns the focus to the list in the active panel and deactivates the quick filter. Conversely, if the quick filter is currently not active, the hotkey places the focus in the quick filter input field, ready for typing. This setting determines what will happen if the quick filter is currently not active and already contains text.

If this setting is checked, the hotkey will activate (run) the quick filter using the existing text.

If this setting is not checked, the hotkey will not activate (run) the filter until new text is entered.

  • Ignore diacritical marks
If this setting is checked, diacritical marks are ignored. For example, when filtering "a", there are filtered also "á", "ä", "à", "â", "å", "ă".
  • Edit field - width (pixels)/color
    This option offers two settings:
    • The width (in pixels) of the input field.
    • After clicking the button, the background color of the input field in the quick filter bar can be chosen.

To show that a quick filter is activated, the background color of the list can be changed (setting: "File list background color if quick filter active" under the menu item "Settings → View → File/folder list → Color/font).

  • Predefined quick filters
This input field allows to predefine a list of quick filters. For this purpose the quick filters are entered delimited by "|". Example: .exe | .jpg;.jpeg | .txt   defines the 3 quick filters for exe files, for jpg and jpeg files and for txt files.
A predefined quick filter can be activated from a popup menu, appearing after clicking the action toolbar button " quick filter popup menu". For this purpose the folder command "quick filter popup menu" has to be inserted in this toolbar under "Tools Customize toolbars...".
