Main menu - File - Move with dialog - Use FreeCommander

If "Use FreeCommander" is selected (under the menu item "Tools → Settings → File/folder operations" in the section "Move"), the FreeCommander "Move" dialog is opened after the activation of the menu item "File → Move with dialog" or the "F6" key.

The "Move" dialog contains the tabs

the information bar

and the buttons

Tab Move

Selected item(s)

The content displayed under "Selected item(s)" differs according to the number of items to be moved:

  • One item to be copied
If only one file (or folder) is selected, the name of the file (or folder) is displayed under "Selected item(s)".
  • Several items to be copied

If several files (and/or folders) are selected, the number of files (and/or folders) is displayed under "Selected item(s)".

from

The folder from where the items are to be moved is displayed under "from".

Target

  • Input field target
The input field "Target" initially holds the folder from the inactive panel and, if only one item is selected, the item name. If several items are selected, "*.*" instead of the name.
If only one item is selected, the item name is focused. Otherwise the entire field content is focused.
  • Option "Use current folder"
If this option is checked, the folder in the input field "Target" is overwritten by the folder from the active panel. In this case "from" and "Target" folder are identical. After clicking the option again, the box is unchecked and the initial field content is restored.
  • Button
After activating the button a selection list with the favorite folders is shown. Clicking a folder overwrites the contents of the input field with the clicked folder.
  • Button
After activating the button or the F4 key, the "Browse for folder" dialog is shown. Selecting a folder and activating "OK" overwrites the contents of the input field with the selected folder.

Include only files of this type:

  • Input field "Include only files of this type"
The content of the input field "Include only files of this type" allows to limit (filter) the number of items selected in the active panel of the FreeCommander main window. This reduces the number of items to be moved. Wildcards and regular expressions are accepted in the input field. As soon as a filter is entered and the tab "Files" or the button "Run" are activated, the contents of the information bar Waiting for starting operation on: ...files ...folders is refreshed.
  • Button
After activating the button a selection list is shown, with the last inputs (filters) in this field and the text "<RegExp>:" (to enter regular expressions). Clicking a row in this selection list overwrites the contents of the input field with the contents of the clicked row.
  • Button
After activating the button a selection list with filters (defined under the menu item "Folder → Filter → Set filter") is shown. Selecting a filter overwrites the contents of the input field with "<Filter>:" + "contents of the filter".

For overwrite decision

Under "For overwrite decision" can be defined, what should be done with files of the target folder, that have the same name as a file to be moved. The following overwrite options are offered:

  • Ask the user
If this option is selected and a file with the same name (as the file to be moved) exists in the target folder, the dialog "Confirm overwrite" is shown, where the user may decide, how to handle the conflict.
  • Overwrite all
If this option is selected, a file with the same name (as the file to be moved) that exists in the target folder is overwritten automatically (without user confirmation).
  • Skip all
If this option is selected, a file is not moved, if a file with the same name exists in the target folder.
  • Overwrite older
If this option is selected, only files with the same name are moved, if their last change date in the target folder is older than in the "From" folder. That means only more actual files are copied.
  • Overwrite smaller
If this option is selected, only files with the same name are moved, if they are larger than the file in the target folder.
  • Auto rename target item
If this option is selected and a file with the same name (as the file to be moved) that exist in the target folder, is renamed (the target folder file) without request. Example: the file "FreeCommander.exe" is renamed to "FreeCommander(2).exe". If "FreeCommander(2).exe" already exists, the new file is named "FreeCommander(3).exe", etc.

Overwrite hidden/system items

This option is applied when the file (to be overwritten) in the target folder has the attribute "system" or "hidden".

If this option is checked, these files are treated the same way as other files, concerning overwriting.

If this option is not checked, the following "Confirm overwrite" dialog is shown (independent of the selected overwrite option):

Overwrite read only items

This option is applied when the file (to be overwritten) in the target folder has the attribute "read only".

If this option is checked, these files are treated the same way as other files, concerning overwriting.

If this option is not checked, the following "Confirm overwrite" dialog is shown (independent of the selected overwrite option):

Preserve file/folder timestamp

If this option is checked, the creation date of the item is preserved.

The creation date is set after the move process. Therefore the moving process must not be interrupted.

Tab Files

The tab "Files" lists all files and folders to be moved with their paths.

Button

Activating the button reloads all files and folders. This may be useful if they can be processed from various workspaces.

Quick filter bar

The quick filter provides the possibility to decrease the number of files to be moved (it is not applied to folders). If a quick filter is activated the option "Preserve file/folder timestamp" is ignored.

  • Input field
The input field "Quick filter" allows to define a filter. (Example: ".bmp; .png; a*.htm")
As soon as the focus is on this field and the first character is typed, the quick filter is activated and the button behind the input field is switched from to .
  • Button

After activating the button a selection list is shown, with the last inputs (filters) in this field. Clicking the button activates the highlighted filter.

Tab Settings

Under the tab "Settings" further settings for the moving process can be defined.

Auto close for successful operation

If this option is checked, the "Move" dialog is closed automatically, as soon as all copy processes are successfully completed.

Auto close for canceled operation

If this option is checked, the "Move" dialog is closed automatically, after one move process was canceled.

Auto minimize when starting the operation

If this option is checked, the "Move" dialog is minimized automatically, after the button was activated.

Perform operation using unbuffered I/O (recommended for very large file transfers)

If this option is checked, move processes are carried out with unbuffered I/O. This may be useful, if very large files are moved, because otherwise the Windows buffering can cause performance problems.

Size limit for unbuffered I/O (GB)

If the option "Perform operation using unbuffered I/O (recommended for very large file transfers)" is checked, in this input field the minimum file size can be defined, starting from that files are moved unbuffered.

Save the overwrite options (except "hidden/system items")

If this option is checked and the button "Save" is activated, the overwrite options defined in the tab "Copy" are also saved (except the option "Overwrite system/hidden items").

Button Save

After activating the button "Save" all settings defined in the tabs "Copy" and "Settings" are saved and applied to the next FreeCommander move processes activated by the menu item "File → Move" or the shortcut "Shift+F6".

Information bar: Waiting for starting operation on: ...files ...folders

In the "Move" dialog the information bar (lowest window line) "Waiting for starting operation on: ...files ...folders" shows the information how many files and folders are to be moved. On opening the dialog the bar is invisible. Whenever the tab "Files" or the button "Run" are activated, the files and folders to be moved are loaded and their number is calculated and shown. The number of files and folders shown in the information bar can be different from the number shown under "Selected item(s)". The differences may result from:

  • The input field "Include only files of this type" contains a filter
  • Under "Selected item(s)" all selected files and folders are counted.
In the information bar all subfolders and all files in selected folders and their subfolders are counted additionally.

Button Queue

Pressing the button adds the move operation to the operations queue and starts the processing of the operations queue.

Activating the button in the operation queue bar opens the operations queue dialog.

File operations via the operations queue are described in the chapter Operations queue.

Button Run

After activating the button the move process for all items to be moved is started directly. The "Move" dialog shows the following modifications:

The "Move" dialog and its modifications are visible only, if the option "Auto minimize when starting the operation" (in the tab "Settings") is not checked. The tab "Settings" is invisible during the copy process.

Pause

Clicking this option checks it and suspends the move process. Clicking it again unchecks the option and continues the move process.

Cancel

After activating the button (during the copy process) the request "Do you really want to cancel the operation?" is shown. After confirming the request, the "Move" dialog is closed (without further move processes). Already completed moves remain.

Moving progress

The moving progress is visualized as follows:

  • The message "x% Move" is shown in the title bar.
  • A progress bar is shown below the item list.

Move status of the items

In the item list each item is preceded by an icon that shows the move status of the item:

  •                Item not yet moved
  •        Item moved successfully
  •        An error has occurred during the move process of this item.
                   The item was not moved.
An error message is shown in the column "Error message" in the row of the item.
  •        The moving of this item was skipped.
                   The item was not copied.

The message bar shows the actually moved item.

The items are moved in the order in which they are listed in the tab "Files".

If the overwrite decision "Ask the user" is selected and a file with the same name (as the file to be moved) exists in the target folder, the dialog "Confirm overwrite" is shown, where the user may decide, how to handle the conflict.

Confirm overwrite

In the dialog "Confirm overwrite" the user may decide, if a file should be overwritten in case of conflict.

This dialog is shown only, if the overwrite decision "Overwrite all" is not selected.

More options

Activating "More options" opens a pop up menu with the following additional options:

  • Overwrite all smaller (Copy larger)
If this option is selected, all target files (with the same name like a file to be moved) are overwritten, if they are smaller than the files to be moved.
  • Auto rename target files

If this option is selected, all target files (with the same name like a file to be moved) are auto renamed first. Afterwards the "With" file is moved normally. Example: the file "FreeCommander.exe" is renamed to "FreeCommander(2).exe". If "FreeCommander(2).exe" already exists, the new file is named "FreeCommander(3).exe", etc.

  • Auto rename copied files

If this option is selected, the files to be moved are moved renamed. In the "With" folder the name of the file does not change. In the target folder the original file will be unchanged. Example: the file "FreeCommander.exe" is renamed to "FreeCommander(2).exe". If "FreeCommander(2).exe" already exists, the new file is named "FreeCommander(3).exe", etc.

Button Cancel

Activating the button "Cancel", cancels the moving process (of this and all further conflict files). Already completed moves remain (moves with no conflicts and moves of conflict files that were manually confirmed).
